The next UNIGIS gvSIG & Sextante eLearning module in german will start at Monday, 5th March 2012.

We have logged hundreds of hours teaching gvSIG and have being working on the gvSIG Project during the last four and a half years developing new functionalities for gvSIG 1.9, 1.10 and 1.11, making documentation, workshops, presentations, tutorials, handbooks, translations, reporting bugs, etc.

gvSIG CE Link Text to Layer

A new functionality "Link Text to Layer" will be implemented in gvSIG CE that let you create links between text elements (map document) and layers (view document).
If you set a layer in the view as not visible, the text in the layout will disappear simultaneously.
To use this new link option follow these instructions:
1.- Add layers to one/more view/s
2.- Create a new map document and insert the view you want to present as a map
3.- Insert the text you would like to have in the map

4.- By Click activate the text object and open the context menu with a right mouse click. Select the option set visibility link, a window with selectable layers will be opened. Select the layer you want to link with your text map object

5.- The text now has an active link to the layer. If you set the layer as not visible in the view, the text will also disappear in the map. Selecting the option remove visibility link, the link between layer and text will be deleted.

SEXTANTE a free Java Library for Geospatial Analysis:

SEXTANTE is a free library for Geospatial Analysis that includes a large set of geoprocessing tools. It contains more than three hundred algorithms for both raster and vector data processing. For most of them, contextual help has been prepared, which provides insight into the functionality of the tool.
In the current version of SEXTANTE it is possible to use an interface to the free software GRASS GIS and SAGA. Since august 2011 SEXTANTE can be also integrated into ArcGIS.
SEXTANTE can be improved by programmers to incorporate analysis functionalities into their software.
Although many innovations have been realized, the SEXTANTE project team members continue with new interesting ideas such as the integration of R, the powerful statistical software, into SEXTANTE.

German gvSIG and SEXTANTE user meeting at the AGIT 2012, Salzburg, Austria
July 4-6 2012

The Call for Papers (presentations and workshops) of the the german gvSIG and SEXTANTE user meeting at the AGIT 2012 is now open (from 01.12.2011 to 01.02.2012).
We are reaching out to speakers interested in presenting your experiences.
Users and developers are encouraged to present their latest projects and software development work to demonstrate the power of gvSIG and SEXTANTE.

The language of the conference is german.

FOSSGIS und deutschsprachige Open Street Map Konferenz 2012

Note to International Speakers
FOSSGIS and Open Street Map conference is a german-language event primarily for a german audience. The program committee will, however, also consider applications for talks or workshops held in English if they are deeemed to add to the quality of the conference. So if you don't speak German, but are a FOSS/Open Data celebrity, or have a story that only you can tell, please do submit your talk. We are unlikely to be able to provide interpreters, but we'll make sure you don't get lost in Germany.

FOSSGIS ist die Abkürzung für Freie und Open Source Software für Geoinformationssysteme und ist die führende Konferenz zu diesem Thema im deutschsprachigen Raum.
Die FOSSGIS Konferenz 2012 wird vom gemeinnützigen Verein FOSSGIS e.V, der OpenStreetMap Community und der Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Hochschule Anhalt in Dessau organisiert.
Die Beitragseinreichung (Vorträge, Workshops, Poster und und Lightning Talks) für die Fossgis 2012 ist vom 07.11.2011 bis 12.12.2011 möglich.

gvSIG and Sextante in UNIGIS

A gvSIG & Sextante eLearning module has been set up in UNIGIS (Universität Salzburg, Centre of Geoinformatics, Austria) in order to provide the breadth of experience and knowledge necessary to work with gvSIG & Sextante. It focuses on practical knowledge and required skills to work with gvSIG in real situations.
For the course to be successful, it is essential that the study packs are of a consistently high quality. The UNIGIS course material undergoes regular quality checking within the UNIGIS team.
The Module contains a range of learning strategies to develop independent learning skills. It is a distance learning study programme. Students will be encouraged to research topics beyond the scope and to develop informal self-help networks, but the packs provide all necessary material for the module. If students have any questions regarding the contents, they will contact the tutor by email.

The module Tutor is Ruth Schönbuchner, who has logged hundreds of hours teaching gvSIG. She has being working on the gvSIG Project during the last four and a half years making documentation, workshops, presentations, tutorials, handbooks, translations, reporting bugs, etc.

Victor Olaya (main developer of Sextante) and Benjamin Ducke (main developer of gvSIG CE) will attend to her as much as they can. Please consider they are not the main tutors of the module, so we can not expect they will answer your questions directly.
The assessment schemes are designed to conform 3 ECTS (approximately 90 hours of learning experience). You will have to complete assignments of 9 lessons.
The fee of the module for those who are not UNIGIS students is 119 €. The Course will be taught in german.

The GIS Starter Package 2.0 provides all information essential to implement GIS applications in your everyday project business.
Those who are new to GIS will have access to all information necessary to successfully familiarise with the subject.
Advanced users of GIS, as well as GIS beginners are introduced to the gvSIG software using video tutorials, practical Welthungerhilfe demo-projects, FAQ and other tools. The package comes as a CD-ROM and includes in detail:

A version of the package was adapted by CSGIS to be used by the gvSIG community and includes gvSIG version 1.11 as well as the actual gvSIG 1.11 user manual provided by the gvSIG Association.
In June 2011 CSGIS was instructed by the WHH with a frame contract for the world-wide technical support.
Concrete questions of project members regarding gvSIG and GIS can so be answered quickly and accomplished via email, video conferences or by phone. CSGIS is also administrating a "GIS Online Forum" to make communications and discussions between users possible and to inform about the actual state of the software and project.
