Gearscape Geoprocessing Language GGL2

GGL2 is a completely new language that takes ideas from different well known languages (SQL, XPath, imperative languages, etc.) to make geoprocessing easy and reliable.
The typical workflow when working with GGL2 is:
- To have a Desktop GIS (e.g. gvSIG CE, QGIS) with some data loaded on it.
- Execute a processing instruction with GGL2 (e.g.: show buildings > 1000 m²):

- Visualize in your Desktop GIS the results of the process:

GGL2 is a programming language designed specifically to solve geoprocessing problems. One key advantage of GGL2 is that scripts can be reused from other scripts and users very easily.
The website of GGL2 is well documented with tutorials and examples to start working with this powerful geoprocessing language.

You will be able to create some functionalities by yourself just writing a GGL2 script. This one for example will add a field with values:

120 maps for medicals with gvSIG CE

We have recently produced about 120 maps with gvSIG CE, which come to be appplied for planning of demands.
Shown on the maps cover regions at the municipal and district level so that on this basis, the supply of medicals can be planned in a region of 12654 km², 9.500.000 inhabitants including also the 8 big cities like Düsseldorf, Köln, Essen, Duisburg, Wuppertal, Bonn, Aachen, Mönchengladbach beside other objectives.

The maps were produced in A4 format, the geometries of the reference regions were calculated from the administrative units produced and processed as a single data set, which was subsequently loaded into a central database.

One of the most important advantages of working with gvSIG CE is the possibility to create several views and maps (e.g. having *.gvp files with about 15 views and layouts) and managing them all together.

Working with gvSIG CE has shown that the software can be used as a cartographic tool: creation of several legend types, symbol editor, advanced labelling, templates for the layouts, export into pdfs, etc.

But of course, there is also a lot to do to improve the software!
gvSIG CE could be optimized by fixing bugs and creating new gvSIG CE features [1]!
The best way to add them to gvSIG CE is to supply a patch!

Adjustments necessary for this software are being discussed with the developers and users in the gvSIG CE user list

The work was a lot of fun!
gvSIG CE will help to improve medicals organization in North Rhine (Germany).

Ruth vom CSGIS-Team!

gvSIG & Sextante Anwendertreffen AGIT 2012

gvSIG CE at 2012 Washington GIS Conference

Karsten Vennemann, principal of Terra GIS Ltd. and education contact for the “Cascadia Users of Geospatial Open Source” group, is ready to present a 4 hour workshop at the WAURISA 2012 conference: “Introduction to gvSIG CE and geo-processing with SEXTANTE”.

The workshop consists of the following three parts (with 15 minutes breaks in between sessions):
1. Introduction to gvSIG CE Desktop GIS
60 minutes, presentation style
Objective: Participants will get a short introduction to free and open source GIS tools,  the desktop GIS gvSIG CE (Community Edition)  and the SEXTANTE library. The overview will include topics such as general GIS functionality in gvSIG CE, supported data formats, editing of GIS data, layout and cartography, accessing spatial databases and available extensions for gvSIG (e.g. 3D, Raster and Remote Sensing, and Network Data Analysis) . A discussion of geo-processing and spatial analysis with native gvSIG and with SEXTANTE tools will close the general overview.
2. “Hands-on” exercises and examples using gvSIG CE
75 minutes, demonstration style, participants can follow the demos “hands-on” on their own (windows based) laptop with gvSIG CE installed.
The exercises will cover the general use of gvSIG: editing of GIS data,  accessing spatial databases, and layout & cartography
Objective: The examples will illustrate how to use gvSIG CE as a general desktop GIS
3. “Hands-on” exercises and examples for Spatial Analysis and Geo-processing with gvSIG CE and SEXTANTE
75 minutes, demonstration style, participants can follow the demos “hands-on” on their own (windows based) laptop with gvSIG CE installed.
The exercises will cover the use of spatial analysis and geo-processing tools in gvSIG CE for raster and vector data: native gvSIG tools, and tools available via the integrated SEXTANTE library (also includes SAGA GIS, GRASS and R (Statistical package) algorithms).
Objective: The examples will illustrate how to use  gvSIG CE and SEXTANTE for Spatial Analysis and Geo-processing in order to learn about the capabilities and functionality available.
